With a history dating back four centuries, the Latymer School is one of London’s most historic and successful grammar schools.

Dear Parents and Friends of Latymer,

The Latymer School is one of the largest and highest performing co-educational selective schools in England and is supported by the Latymer Foundation. The Board of Governors serves to give strategic direction and ask questions of the school’s management ensuring that financial resources are managed well, employees of the school community are meaningfully deployed and that students have a range of curricular and extra-curricular activities and are safe, in the broadest meaning of the word. Governors also ensure that the school complies with legislative requirements.

There are 16 Governors, nine of whom are Foundation Governors appointed by the Latymer Foundation at Edmonton. Being a Governor is demanding but very rewarding and is a wonderful way to give back to our local community. We give our time, experience and expertise as volunteers because we believe the school’s vision, ethos and strategic direction will enable it to continue to provide the best possible education for our students and help every child achieve their potential.

The role of the School Governor and Governing board

The role of the governing board is absolutely key to the effectiveness of a school as it is responsible for working with the school to ensure that it delivers a good quality education. The core functions of the governing board are to:

  • Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.
  • Hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff.
  • Oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent.

The role of the governing board is a strategic one, its key functions are to:

  • Set the aims and objectives for the school.
  • Set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives.
  • Set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives.
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives.
  • Hold the leadership of the school to account.

The Headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing board.

The term of office for our governors is four years. Our Governing Board consists of the headteacher, three elected parent governors, one elected staff governor, one local authority governor, nine foundation governors and one co-opted governor.
