Zackariya and Haringey Mayor

A Latymer Year 9 student elected

Congratulations to Zakariya, Year 9 student, who has recently been elected as Deputy Youth Leader of Haringey for two years – a great achievement that reflects his passion, dedication, and unwavering belief in the power of young people. This Youth Council initiative welcomed young residents aged 11–18 to stand as candidates or vote for their peers. After weeks of campaigning, manifesto launches, and borough-wide voting, Zakariya is now one of five young persons on this Council.

Special commendation as Zakariya was the only candidate who doesn’t attend a school in Haringey. He campaigned tirelessly, proving that commitment, authenticity, and hard work can break down any barrier. He spoke passionately about the belief that youth are not future leaders in waiting but active changemakers today. His dedication to amplifying youth voices and ensuring they are heard at every level of decision-making drove his message and inspired those who supported him.

His election campaign was built around a bold and inclusive vision for Haringey’s future, built on opportunity, safety, equality, and empowerment. His key aims as Deputy Youth Leader include:

  • Expanding support in schools and community centres, ensuring they provide not just education but also mental health support, career guidance, inclusive activities and safe, welcoming spaces where young people can grow, learn, and express themselves.
  • Tackling knife crime through prevention, by advocating for enhanced community engagement, meaningful mentorship opportunities, accessible safe spaces, and positive alternatives that steer young people away from crime and towards opportunity.
  • Strengthening youth representation in local decision-making by creating clear channels between the youth and local leaders, ensuring young voices shape policies that impact their lives. He helped initiate the launch of the Haringey Youth Council’s TikTok account, which will begin posting soon to better engage young residents.
  • Fighting for strong local climate action by advocating for environmental protection and involving young people in shaping solutions that will secure a safer, greener future.

As Zakariya states “I enter this role with a powerful message: young people deserve to be heard, supported, and empowered. I stand as a reminder that leadership knows no borders, and that passion paired with resilience can inspire real change.”

We wish Zakariya all the best in this exciting new role and well done for wanting to make a positive impact across Haringey!
