Careers in the Creative Arts by Dr Alexander Sergeant
This week, our school was lucky to have Dr Alexander Sergeant, a lecturer from the University of Westminster, who delivered an engaging and thought-provoking talk about careers in the creative industries. Vihursh, Year 13 student, tells us more about the lecture.
Dr Sergeant began with a really interesting dive into the history of creative arts courses at university. He explained how these courses, which used to be underestimated (and still are), have now become prominent in a world dominated by media and storytelling.
One highlight of the talk was the practical advice he gave about choosing the right career path in the creative industries. Dr. Sergeant emphasised how important it is to match your passions with your skills and to research the opportunities out there. He didn’t sugar-coat the difficulties of breaking into the industry, which
actually made his advice feel even more honest and helpful.
He also shared what universities look for in applicants and highlighted key skills like teamwork, managing finances, and resilience. He mentioned that transferable skills like these are often missing in the industry, so he encouraged us to develop them if we want to stand out. Dr Sergeant’s honesty and down-to-earth approach made the session both inspiring and fun. It’s not every day you get to hear from someone so experienced and passionate about the creative world, and we’re grateful for the chance to learn from him.
