Year 12 - 13
A Level Politics. Edexcel Syllabus.
In AS Politics We have a strong British focus study in political parties, pressure groups, elections, current politics and the relationship between judges and politicians. We strive to use up-to-date examples focussing on the Conservatives and the likely 2017 referendum, the significance of The Syria vote both for Parliament and the Prime Minister and the implications of the rise of anti –politics seen with rise of UKIP and the election of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader.
At A2 we study Political Ideologies studying in considerable depth traditional political beliefs such as liberalism, conservatism and socialism while also looking at developmental ideologies including feminism and multiculturalism and environmentalism. Perhaps the central idea running through the syllabus concerns the role of the state and the place of the individual summed up in the question does the state protect us or does it limit our freedom?
Many of our students apply to study politics or politics related degrees at competitive universities including PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) at Oxford and HSPS (Human, Social and Political Science) at Cambridge. Ex Latymer Politics students are a familiar sight on Newsnight, reporting for the BBC, working in at Westminster or speaking in the European parliament. Given the calibre of our students we anticipate seeing more familiar faces on our television screens soon.
