Visit to the Tate Modern
On the 13th February, the Year 12 and 13 Art classes made a visit to the Tate Modern down in central London, in order to find inspiration for their upcoming exam projects.
While wandering through the Collections and making studies of works and exhibitions, the Sixth Formers were able to find material from a wide variety of sources to deepen their understanding of their exam projects. We were lucky enough to view Mire Lee’s ‘Open Wound’ exhibit currently using the space of the Turbine Hall, which envelops the enormous space in a tangle of striking hanging sculptures and mechanical installations, drawing on the Tate’s history of being a power station.
The Latymer Art trips are a highlight of the year for all art students, and this was no exception. Molly (Year 13)
I liked the trip to the Tate and found that the visit was beneficial for my work leading up to the art exam; it was really enjoyable to explore the gallery and various works with my peers and generate ideas - collaboratively and individually - and it was definitely very helpful for the next step of researching artists and works for my project. Samantha (Year 11)
In the TATE art galleries, I observed many different pieces of modern art - bold and eccentric pieces using a less modern touch e.g. Chetwynd producing a bold statement using performance rituals that have been practiced since recorded history. There are also artists that exhibited history with an eccentric medium to showcase this - for example Nalini Malini explores human past, history and suffering in her shadow play 'In Search of Vanquished Blood'. Her way of using projections of sentimental and historical images is a unique and modern medium while touching into ancient and pre-modern visuals. Both these artists inspired me as I research Ancient Civilisations and human past for my project on remnants. Ela (Year 11)
