Medical Interview preparation

04/11/2024

Sixth Form students benefitting from alumni's experience and knowledge

Last half-term, Year 13 students were privileged to attend an informative lecture led by Dr Rishi Chopra (class of 1996), who shared valuable insights into the preparation needed for medical and dental school interviews.

Dr Chopra, whose outstanding experience includes his role in Imperial College medical admission review, brought not only his expertise but also a genuine passion for helping students succeed. The lecture was packed with valuable insights on the intricacies of multiple mini interviews (MMIs) and traditional interview skills, guiding students to understand what admissions panels are really looking for and how they can present their best selves.

Dr Chopra guided students through strategies for tackling a wide range of interview questions, from discussing personal motivation and ethical dilemmas to addressing current healthcare topics, including challenges facing the NHS. He emphasised the importance of scientific knowledge but also essential personal qualities like empathy, resilience, and situational judgment, all of which are crucial for a successful career in healthcare. He discussed the importance of clear, detailed answers and explored key topics facing the medical field today, such as the NHS’s budget and their response to resource shortages, the mental health crisis as well as the ethical dilemmas regarding euthanasia and assisted suicide.

As Akshayan, Year 13, explains "Dr Chopra helped students realise the responsibility that comes with a career in medicine. His talk encouraged us not only to think critically but to approach these challenges with a deep sense of empathy and integrity. Students appreciated Dr Chopra’s advice giving them confidence and clarity regarding the interview process and the realities of working in the medical field. As an  aspiring medic, I express my appreciation and thanks to Dr Chopra for his time, wisdom, and encouragement, which has left a lasting impact on myself and many aspiring healthcare professional students at the school."
