Talk from former student, now a Managing Director at Goldman Sachs.
On Thursday 8th January, Dush Pathmanandam (Class of 1987, now based in New York), delivered a talk to around 100 students including insights into the investment banking industry, life working at Goldman Sachs and fond memories of Latymer. Students described the talk as engaging and thought-provoking.
After attending the Latymer school, Dush studied Actuarial Science at City University and is an associate of the UK Society of Investment Professionals and CFA Institute. After a long and successful career, he eventually became Managing Director at Goldman Sachs in 2021 in Asset & Wealth Management, working with institutional, family office and ultra high net worth clients.
Highlights of his illustrious career include his proudest achievement (building a Group from scratch), managing high net-worth assets, learning Japanese in his final year of university (‘because why not!’), and more recently being an executive producer of a documentary. He claimed he found the dynamism of the role the best aspect and the people you encounter, ‘yesterday is always different from tomorrow.’
Dush pinned his success on having the ‘freedom to explore and think,’ encouraging students to embrace the widest range of opportunities available to them. He also mentioned how his time at Latymer factored into his desire to excel. Furthermore, Dush defined his greatest skill as empathy and expressed gratitude at being fortunate enough to have the ‘experience of meeting different people.’
Moreover, he spoke to students about the key traits he looks for in an employee: collaboration, genuine passion, awareness of the world, and most of all, high-quality communication. He also cited the apprenticeship course at Goldman Sachs taken through the Queen Mary University of London as a viable pathway into the company.
Leo, a Year 12 student, said that “it was really valuable to hear from someone with lots of experience within the industry. I thoroughly enjoyed the talk and found it an enriching activity.”
Overall, every attendee would like to greatly thank Dush for his time, and we look forward to hearing from him in the future.
