Chemistry Race

An incredible competition!

Sixth Formers taking part in the Chemistry Race 2024

On 9th February, five highly capable chemists (Kota, Manny, Oliver, Louis and Martina) participated in the Chemistry Race 2024 held at the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge. They performed very well and secured 13th place (6th amongst the state schools).

As Kota, Year 13 student, explains “This year, we entered the Cambridge Chemistry Race, under the team name 'Latymerium' to honour the 400th anniversary of our school. It was an exciting competition where we solved problems of varying difficulties, types, and topics. Some of the questions were very amusing. For example, one of the questions was about calculating the amount of clotted cream needed to use as fuel for a car journey! Apart from the funny questions, we thought that the atmosphere of the competition was great, especially when we ran down the stairs to hand in our answers as fast as possible. The lively discussions we had as a team throughout made the overall experience even more enjoyable and memorable!”
