T
he Association of Parents & Friends of Latymer School (APFLS) plays a large role in supporting the school,
its staff and its pupils. We need as many parents, carers and friends as possible to help with that. If you
haven’t helped before, why not offer an hour of your time next term; you could help at a car boot sale, serve
refreshments during the interval at one of the school concerts or shows, supervise the junior party or set up
tables for the quiz night. You may be surprised and enjoy it so much, you’ll certainly be made very welcome by
our core team of parent volunteers.
The APFLS is a registered charity and over the past 30 years the efforts of many parents have helped to raise
hundreds of thousands of pounds to add just a little more to the opportunities and experiences that Latymer
can bring to all its students. We are a vital contributor to the school’s educational offer. 2015 has been an
especially productive year despite challenging economic circumstances, and we are on target to match the
£35,000 we raised in 2014, with our International Food Fair in June bringing in about one third of this.
So far this academic year APFLS volunteers have organised ten car boot sales, two quiz nights, the
International Food Fair, a junior party, served countless cups of tea and coffee and provided refreshments
at after-school events as well as organising a Year 11 Thames river trip to help students celebrate their long
time together at Latymer. The money raised so far has been used to purchase many items and equipment
for different departments and clubs at the school, ranging from German dictionaries, historical artefacts and
media apparatus to the scenery for the junior drama production of “The Wizard of Oz”, as well as purchasing a
new minibus for the school, which the year 7s were able to use this summer in Cwm.
