A
s part of our World Book Day celebrations in March we welcomed Candy Gourlay, author of Shine and
Tall Story to speak to Year 8 assembly. Shine was nominated for the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize 2014,
and has received excellent reviews:
‘A precious and important novel that also explores exile from neighbours, family and country. The book is
about reinvention and the faces we present to the world, whether it be in person, on a postcard or on the
internet, all wrapped up in an exciting and perfectly paced story with a disturbing and dramatic climax.’ Philip
Ardagh, The Guardian
Candy Gourlay was born in the Philippines. She has also written about how the natural environment in
that region with extreme events such as tsunamis has influenced their mythology and culture. She gave a
wonderful talk about her life and career as a writer, and encouraged the students to be the heroes of their
own stories. Afterwards, the students met and talked to Candy, and some bought signed copies of her books.
We added Shine to our World map for Around the World in 80 Books!
