e are looking forward to celebrating World Book Day (5 March 2015). Our theme will be Books from
Around the World. On 12 March we will welcome Candy Gourlay, author of Shine and Tall Story to speak
to Year 8 assembly. Shine was nominated for the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize 2014, and has received
excellent reviews:
‘A precious and important novel that also explores exile from neighbours, family and country. The book is
about reinvention and the faces we present to the world, whether it be in person, on a postcard or on the
internet, all wrapped up in an exciting and perfectly paced story with a disturbing and dramatic climax.’
Philip Ardagh, The Guardian
Candy Gourlay was born in the Philippines. She has also written about how the natural environment in that
region of the world with extreme weather events such as tsunamis has influenced their mythology and
culture. We look forward to hearing her speak about her life and writing. We are sure it will be a fascinating
and inspiring author visit.
