he Mayor’s London Schools Gold Club is an annual scheme which celebrates and shares exceptional
practice in London’s primary and secondary schools. Gold Club members are schools that have succeeded in
improving pupils’ aspirations and achievements. The scheme champions these exceptional London schools
with a Mayoral Award.
The external examination results of London schools a few decades ago lagged behind those of the rest of
England. Recently they have been better than the national average. There are various reasons for this success
story for London schools. One was called London Challenge, led by the inspirational figure Sir Tim Brighouse.
The idea of sharing good practice amongst schools has been developed so that with membership of the Gold
Club comes a commitment to share good practice with other schools.
In 2013 Latymer was invited to become a member of this group, and again in 2014. The awards were
presented in City Hall last October. Latymer was also invited to provide the string quartet to play during lunch
and the presentation of the awards. Whoever I spoke to during the informal parts of the event remarked on
the calibre of their playing. It was an honour to be presented with the award on behalf of students and staff:
the certificate is in the Small Hall.
