ear 9 enjoyed a day’s fieldwork in June exploring the legacy of the London Olympics and the concept of
Urban Sustainability, as part of the Geography curriculum.
The students visited ‘The Crystal’, a new exhibition centre near the Royal Victoria Dock which showed powerful
interpretations of what our cities could, or should, look like in future decades. The students immersed
themselves in the interactive displays and videos, and interpreted the challenges facing our urbanising planet.
After a picnic lunch they then travelled to the Stratford Olympic Park and visited several sites in an attempt to
evaluate the success of the Olympic legacy for London. A highlight was to step inside the VeloPark, location of
the gold medals won by Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and the GB Cycling squad.
“The day linked together several of the topics Year 9 have been studying this year,” said Head of Geography
Nik Tether, “including ‘Our World in 2030’ and Brazil, location of the next Olympic Games. The students had
several valuable discussions about the successes and lessons to be learned from 2012, and whether Rio 2016
can be even greener.”
