Latymer 1st XI Victory
I
T
HAD
been a number of years since
the Latymer 1st XI had reached a
football final; so after beating Bishop
Stopford School in the semi-final of the
Enfield Schools Cup, back in December,
we were all eagerly awaiting the final
against St Ignatius College. The build-up
in the weeks before the final was not
promising as we played Ignatius twice
within a month and drew and then lost
to them. The day of the final loomed and
more disappointment as the bad weather
caused a postponement until after the
Easter holiday. Eventually the big day
came and we arrived at Brimsdown
Rovers football Club for the big
showdown. for many it was the first time
they had played on such a large stadium
pitch, but as the game progressed we
made good use of the extra space and
took control of the early play. However,
in the first 10 minutes we failed to
convert 2 clear chances, but shortly after
that we took the lead. A second goal
shortly after half time boosted our
confidence further and Ignatius did little
to trouble us in the rest of the game and
we ran out as victors with a final score of
2-0. This had been a complete team
performance, one of those rare games in
which everyone produced their best
individual performance. This was the first
Enfield Cup win for the senior team for
19 years, and the team were suitably
ecstatic. However, they had more trouble
opening the bottle of bubbly than they
did in winning the game!

NE Of
our most pleasurable events
is the annual Gala Dinner at the
House of Lords; even more magical
this year due to glorious July weather.
Sponsored by Lord Graham of Edmonton
(Lord Ted, as he is affectionately known),
this very popular
event started in
2001 and we are
extremely grateful
to Lord Graham for
his continued
support of the School. Over 90 parents,
governors, former students and friends
of Latymer were able to enjoy a
fascinating tour of the Palace of
Westminster, followed by drinks on the
terrace of the House of Lords. During this
time our guests were entertained by the
Latymer string quartet accompanied by
Jim Harrison, Director of Music. After
dinner, we listened with interest to
speeches from our host Lord Graham of
Edmonton, Reeta Chakrabarti, our guest
speaker and Ian Pilsworth, chair of
Governors. The proceedings were
directed by our excellent master of
ceremony, Bill Gloyn (former parent).
