Dmitri Shostakovich is widely
regarded as the greatest
composer of the 20th
century, and his music
played a crucial role in
history. He was born in St
Petersburg in 1906 and by
the age of thirteen was
studying music at the
Petrograd Conservatory. He
was a child protégé and by
the time he left the
conservatory, had composed
his first symphony. As a
composer in Soviet Russia,
Shostakovich was under
constant pressure for
approval for his music by the
State. They wanted music
that was both patriotic and
cheerful enough for the
general public to enjoy.
During the Terror, many of
his friends and colleagues
were killed or punished for
being supposed enemies of
the State. In 1936
Shostakovich was
denounced by the state.
