This week's eco challenge is: Make sure the lights are switched off every time you leave a room
Why? - Lighting typically accounts for 15% of an average households' energy bills. £1.9 billion a year is spent by UK households on lighting. Everyone could easily reduce the amount to money spent on lighting at home and at school simply by switching off the lights. Electricity generation is one of the biggest sources of carbon emissions. Therefore, by leaving your lights on when not needed is a completely unnecessary contributor to climate change. 500kg of CO2 is produced when generating enough electricity to leave a 100 watt incandescent bulb on for a year.
