Latymer Laureate

Congratulations to Ivan, who has been appointed Latymer Laureate and Molly, who is the new Apprentice Laureate. Many thanks to all aspiring poets who entered – the field was very strong indeed this year and choosing the winners proved a very difficult decision. The winning entries are published below – ‘Poor Man’ by Ivan and ‘November’ by Molly:

Poor Man

A poor man sits in grimy streets
Wrapped in Winter’s icy sheets
Spring leaps by a charming boy
And plays him like a children’s toy
Summer stops his racing car
To throw out ash from his cigar
But wise old Autumn softly comes
And lifts him up from city slums
And cradles him in arms of leaves
High above the blackened eaves

November

She stands there
Graceful
At the edge of a stage

waiting

Watching as sweet October laughs
across pearlescent skies
Swirling fiery gusts of leaves
over the world

waiting

She wishes she could
Stride out there,
See smiles falter, then

fade.

But still she waits.

Wrapped in a cloak
Of grey,
Shadows

She steals
into
the world.

Frost tipped winds Howl

Still she moves on

She passes through households bringing no joy

Still she moves on

Still

Moves

On.
