In early April six short-listed stories, chosen by the English department from numerous accomplished entries, were submitted to the prestigious Mayor's award for writing competition. The competition was open to all students in year three to eight across the Enfield borough and on the award evening the battle for top prize in the secondary category was stiff. Some fantastic stories were read by a variety of special guests.
We are pleased to announce that, after an excellent evening listening to some superb stories, our very own Polly Rayner in 8LB, took first place in the year eight category and winner in the overall section.
The judges said that they had found the piece incredibly evocative and they were moved by the beauty of Polly’s story. In ten years of teaching English, and having read some highly impressive pieces of creative writing, I would thoroughly agree - it is the most accomplished and beautiful short story that I have ever had the privilege to read. I hope to that she will continue to write and that we all get to read more of her work in the future.
