Bridge Competition EBU Schools Cup

On Saturday, the bridge team took part in its second competition, the EBU schools' cup, at Loughborough Grammar School. After an abysmal start, getting 2/20 and 3/20 VPs on the first 2 rounds, admittedly against difficult opponents, the team pulled it back in the third round with a 17/3 victory. After lunch, we were sadly pitted against 3 adults (one of whom was a former English international) for an unfortunate 0/20 VP loss. However, never giving up, the team went into the final round with nothing to lose, winning on incredible declarer play and defence (my highlight being a finesse against the 9 to make 5 Clubs), for a 17 VP gain. Our final position was 10th out of 16, although we are treating it as 8th, as we were only 2 VPs behind the team in eighth we almost definitely would have got was it not for the unfair play in the 4th round. Well done to Nicole, Ivan and George, who have only played in one other schools' competition, two of whom only started playing competitively less than 6 months ago. Thanks also to Nicole's dad, who took us to the event (which was a two hour drive away) and is always there to provide useful bridge tips. We are still recruiting for competitions next academic year, and if you are interested please contact Isaac in Year 11 y14isske@latymer.co.uk
