Eco-Committee Challenge of The Week

Why? - by eating all of your food and not wasting it, you are helping the environment in two ways:

  1. Producing, moving, storing and cooking food uses energy, fuel and water, each of which let off greenhouse gases contributing to climate change. Think of a pack of cheese - all the resources that go into raising the cows, producing and transporting the cheese, even the fuel we use to drive to the shop to buy it. That's a lot of wasted effort if it's just chucked away at the end of the week. In the UK we throw away the equivalent of more than three million slices of cheese a day!

If we stopped throwing this good food away it would save the equivalent of at least 17m tonnes of carbon dioxide. That's the environmental equivalent of taking one in five cars off UK roads.

  1. If packaging has food or drink in it, it becomes impossible to recycle. Even a very small amount of drink left in a can, or water in a plastic bottle, contaminates will make the whole recycling bin useless for recycling. By eating all your food and drink you are ensuring everything that can be recycled is recycled.
