Department Background

We deliver the three distinct strands within computing as identified by the Royal Society: Computer science (CS), information technology (IT) and digital literacy (DL). Each component is essential in preparing pupils to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Computer science is the scientific and practical study of computation: what can be computed, how to compute it, and how computation may be applied to the solution of problems. Information technology is concerned with how computers and telecommunications equipment work, and how they may be applied to the storage, retrieval, transmission and manipulation of data. Digital literacy is the ability to effectively, responsibly, safely and critically navigate, evaluate and create digital artefacts using a range of digital technologies.

Computing is supported by the technical ICT team who deliver excellent hardware, software and services to the school. We aim to enable both education and study, and to provide students with the skills and confidence to thrive in the rapidly changing technological landscape.

Students are encouraged to embrace new technology safely both in and out of school. A range of electronic teaching tools are used throughout the school including, tablets, interactive whiteboards, voting systems, visualisers, mobile classrooms, mobile devices and data-logging sensors. Software and hardware provision is reviewed periodically according to educational need. OFSTED rated our provision as “Outstanding” in a rating that built upon our “Excellent” at the 2005 Full Inspection and “Outstanding” at the 2008 reduced tariff inspection. We are proud of our innovative uses of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) across the school, and believe that the use of technology can enhance teaching and learning across the school to bring the best pupil experience.

Year 7 - 9

Throughout Years 7, 8 and 9 students have access to curricula that develops student learning in CS, IT and DL.


  • Learn the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
  • Gain the skills to analyse problems in computational terms
  • Develop practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
  • Evaluate and apply information technology
  • Analytically to solve problems.
  • Become responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
