  • Unit 1H: Tsarist and Communist Russia 1855-1964

    This is a breadth study, inspecting the historical developments under the late Romanovs and Premiers Lenin, Stalin and Khrushchev. The course takes us on a journey from the Emancipation of the Serfs, to the pivotal 1917 Revolution and the subsequent creation of the Soviet state. This unit is worth 40% of the A-Level and will be assessed by answering one question on historical interpretations, and two essay questions from a choice of four.

    Unit 2E: The English Revolution 1625-1660

    This unit is a depth study into conflicts that emerged between King and Parliament over issues concerning religion, politics and the economy. This will encompass Civil War, regicide and experimentation in governance. Students will have the opportunity to explore the events surrounding arguably the most turbulent and most radical period of British history. This unit is worth 40% of the A-Level and will be assessed by answering one question on source analysis, and two essay questions from a choice of three.

    Coursework

    An essay of 3000-3500 words, based on students' own personal study. It will be internally marked and then moderated by AQA. This unit is worth 20% of the overall A-Level.

  • A-level History encourages a wide range of skills. The most important of these are developing powers of logical analysis based upon available evidence and presenting these in written form. You will develop essay writing skills, the ability to synthesise and present a coherent argument and to conduct individual research using the growing collection of books and CD ROMs in the LRC. We advocate a policy of cautious use of the internet. The ability to write in a clear and logical fashion will serve you well in later life.

  • You will always have two teachers for A-level History.

  • Whilst a good GCSE pass at History is advantageous, certain able students may be able to study AS or A-level History without having taken the subject at GCSE. The most important qualification is a spirit of enquiry and an interest in the subject.

  • Teaching methods vary but focus guidance from your teachers in building up a comprehensive set of notes on the main topics. You will be expected to make individual presentations and to make your own notes as well as being taken through the main points of a particular topic by your teacher. For the second half of Year 13 you will be expected to attend individual tutorials with your teacher to help you plan your research assignment.

    In addition you will cover as part of key skills: communication, problem solving, working with others, information technology (the use of historical data bases), the use of number (this usually involves such areas as election statistics or production figures) and working with others.

  • Like most A-levels History is not a vocational end in itself but is an ideal preparation for a career in Journalism, Law, Civil Service, Local Government and Administration. An A-level or degree in History is proof to an employer that you are literate and have an enquiring and analytical mind.
