The Latymer Link - page 27

A
particular feature of this year for me has been the challenge to accommodate the considerable talents
of the current Year 13 musicians in providing solo opportunities. We have seen high quality solos with
orchestra from Yurie Lee (Schumann Cello Concerto), Yudi Wu (Chopin Piano Concerto No.1) and Rebecca
Whitehouse (Mozart Oboe Concerto), with Clarence Ip-Tang (Mozart Piano Concerto No.23), Toby Cook
(Hummel Fantasy for Viola) and Charlotte Eves (Fauré Fantaisie for Flute) featuring in the Gala Concert. The
current generation of Barbershop and A Cut Above, not to mention Jazz Band, are also testament to the
outstanding talent and commitment of our sixth formers. As usual they have risen to the challenge of leading
rehearsals and organising interesting repertoire for those groups. No fewer than nine of our current Year 13
musicians are set to study music at university or conservatoire.
At the end of term 50 Latymer musicians travel to Italy to perform in a series of concerts in the Lake Garda
area, including in cathedrals in Verona and Venice. Chamber Choir last performed in St Mark’s in 2006 and this
year will no doubt prove just as memorable an experience for these pupils.
F
inally, we say goodbye to Mr DeMott at the end of this term. He joined Latymer in January 2010 and has
contributed greatly to the extra-curricular life of the music department, whether in running Junior Singers and
Sinfonia, working as Musical Director for junior productions of Hairspray and The Wizard of Oz, or assisting
with events such as the Pop, Jazz and All That evenings and chamber concerts. We are grateful to him for all
his work at Latymer over the years and wish him all the best in his new Head of Music post in Hampshire.
