RIP Joyce Darling

Emma Halstead and Christine Smith of Latymer Old Students Association represented the school this morning at the funeral of Joyce Darling (nee Gibbs).

Joyce was born in 1923 and started studying at Latymer in September 1935, just before her 12th birthday. The outbreak of World War II in 1939 put an end to her formal education, but during the war she served with the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), the women's branch of the British Army.

She has remained a lifelong Edmonton resident, heavily involved with the parish church and school of St Edmunds, Hertford Road. She returned to Latymer regularly for LOSA reunions and events and without fail, represented her generation of Latymer contemporaries as a member of the Wreath Party at the school’s annual Remembrance Assembly each November.

Joyce is pictured here with Dick Hibberd (1928-35) on Summer Reunion Day in July 2015. Dick passed away last year but would have celebrated his 100th birthday next week, on 12th February 2017.
