"We had a fantastic visit from Manga illustrator and author Sonia Leong, who specialises in in the anime/Manga style and comic artwork. She is a core member of Sweatdrop Studios, the leading UK comic collaborative. Sonia talked to Year 9 assembly about her career and the world of Manga. Her talk was illustrated with examples of the diverse styles she draws in. Students enjoyed her lively presentation: "She seems a very nice person, and really enthusiastic about what she does." Thirty students then took part in an art workshop where Sonia demonstrated how to draw faces for Manga, and how to build up your story on the page. She left students some scripts that they can illustrate. We then held a Meet the Author book sale and book signing in the Library at break time. The room was full of Manga fans who enjoyed browsing and buying the vividly coloured new books, including Draw Manga: Complete Skills.
Sonia Leong last visited us in 2013, so there were some familiar faces – students who were keen on Manga as lower school students, who are now Senior Pupils or involved in running Manga and Anime Society. Sonia runs her own business, and she talked to some 6th formers about using her Economics degree as a foundation for her successful career as a freelance illustrator. All in all, it was a colourful and action-packed visit, and a great start to this year's World Book Day celebrations here at Latymer. Sonia's latest book is A Brush with Magic (Dec 2015) published by Sweatdrop Studios."
