Fifty years ago this afternoon, HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother visited Latymer to officially open the extensions which now form the north-western wing of the school: two gyms (one now converted to the Seward Studio) and associated changing facilities, three art rooms, a two storey technology block as well as several new or modified classrooms.
Upper Sixth student Graham Fisher (1960-67), sound engineer on the day, was asked to make a recording of the QM’s speech, which he did - covertly making a second copy for his own archive. Our own copy has been mislaid but luckily Graham still has his and has recently done some work to digitise and restore it. He has kindly shared it with me – let me know if you would like to have a listen and I will forward it to you.
I have some other memorabilia of the visit: the official programme, some photos and the meticulously detailed planning notebook which includes guest list, timings, seating plans, etc – anyone interested to see them is very welcome pop in to the Foundation Office (off the Small Hall) today or tomorrow and take a look.
