Congratulations to former student Janet Bird (nee Beard), now Chairman of Latymer Old Students Association, who was awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours list, for services to the community in Hertford - with special mention of her running Christmas Alone for over 25 years.

Christmas Alone is a significant ecumenical event through Hertford & District Churches Together, of which Janet is this year's Chairman. This year, Christmas Alone fed over one hundred people in Sele School on Christmas Day, with fifty further meals delivered to the housebound. All guests received hampers of food to keep them going over the festive period, cakes and a present from Father Christmas and those at the school were entertained and had afternoon tea as well! Like all previous years, the day only happened through Janet organising many volunteers both before and on the day. The cost of the event was covered by donations, as it has been since it started 29 years ago.

Janet writes “It was my time at Latymer that instilled in me the values of caring for others and putting something back into society”
