National Poetry Day Thursday 4 October – "What rhymes with 'purple'?" This year's National Poetry Day was on the theme of Change. We celebrated with a Write On event in the Library at Lunchtime. Ms Moreton provided students with guidance on how to write different forms of poems such as ballads, sonnets and haiku. Young poets enjoyed constructing their poems, and sharing them. (Some will be posted on the English Department website.) We also launched the competition for this year's Latymer Laureate – a student who will write about key events during the school year. Aspiring Laureates will write on the theme of technology – another facet of exponential change in our lives. For example, rhyming dictionaries can now be accessed in the form of a handy app! We had fun looking up rhymes for "orange" and "purple". Throughout changing times and seasons, poetry allows us to express our views and visions in a striking and moving way. It remains popular with many of our young writers at Latymer and we thoroughly enjoyed this creative session. Students also enjoyed themed lessons, and gaining inspiration from our collection of poetry books in the Library.
