Battle of the Somme 1916-2016

“In grateful memory of the Old Boys of this school who gave their lives in the cause of liberty during the Great War 1914-19”.

Today in particular we remember 2nd Lt Quintin Livingtone Smith, an old boy of Bolton Grammar School and until enlistment in October 1915 a teacher at Latymer , who was killed on 1st July 1916 during the attack on Thiepval Chateau made by 15th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers ( 1st Salford Pals). Like many of the 19,240 British soldiers killed on the Somme that day, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, the focus of today’s centenary commemorations.
