New Sports & Dining Hall Campaign

We are delighted to announce the New Sports & Dining Hall Complex is now complete and fully operational.

The new building incorporates four badminton courts, full size netball and basketball courts, changing rooms with showers, three teaching classrooms and fitness Suite with techno gym equipment, as well as the replacement kitchen and dining hall.

The scheme includes features which make the building energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Hot water is provided by use of solar panels and ‘sun pipes’ send daylight down from the roof into corridors and classrooms reducing the need for artificial light; wind catchers provide ‘fresh air’ ventilation. The Latymer School is the first in the borough of Enfield to include this type of energy source into a major building, it is a pathfinder project.

The building is largely a ‘brown field development’ with the footprint of the sports hall, dining hall and classrooms only slightly bigger than the previous 1940’s catering block it replaced.

The P.E Department at Latymer continues to go from strength to strength. The completion of the new Sports Hall has led to major changes taking place in our curricular and extra curricular provision. Fundamentally, it has enabled the Department to significantly broaden the Curriculum allowing pupils a much wider choice of activity. The major changes have seen the introduction of badminton, volleyball, table tennis and Health and Fitness. We have also been able to enhance the quality of basketball that we are able to offer.

The Latymer P.E Department offers a wide ranging and extensive extra curricular programme. We operate a ‘Sport for All’ approach where all pupils are encouraged to participate regardless of their ability level. Practices take place before school, at lunchtimes and after school. A total of 56 clubs run throughout the week and our average daily programme will see upwards of 300 students taking part in these activities. Fixtures occur most evenings of the week with block sports fixtures taking place every Saturday.

Dining Hall
Since September 2004 the pupils at Latymer have been getting used to new healthy eating options. The catering team have continued the healthy alternative with the opening of the new state of the art kitchen and dining hall. Fresh hot meals are cooked on a daily basis and sandwiches are prepared on site. Eventually, a coffee shop service will be provided for 6th formers and staff.

The light and airy Dining Hall has a special acoustic ceiling and seats 280 at each session.

Fund raising for the Sports Fund is going well so far, and we have reached £260,000 of the £300,000 (10% of the total cost of the building), which is the amount we have to raise as our contribution to this project. With fund raising initiatives coming up and with the help of the Latymer Community we are sure we will reach our goal in the very near future.
